UK 2013: Destination 2

Back again! Time for destination number two in the UK: Oxford!

Oxford is home to one of the most prestigious universities in the world, Oxford University, the oldest in the English speaking world, according to the knowledgeable Wikipedia :)

Oxford University is home to 38 colleges and 6 private halls. Some notable alumni are Margaret Thatcher, CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, Oscar Wilde, TS Eliot, John Wesley, and Adam Smith, to name a few.

During my time in Oxford, I’d like to visit several of the colleges, particularly Magdalen, Pembroke, Merton, and Hertford, as well as spend some quality time in the Bodleian Library.

Of course, I can’t call myself an Inklings fan without dining at the Eagle and Child so that’s definitely going to have to happen.

I’d also love to take Addison’s Walk around Magdalen, a favourite walk of Lewis and Tolkien.

If possible, it would also be lovely to visit the homes of Lewis and Tolkien while I’m here, but I only have a day and a half! So we’ll see what can be accomplished in that time :)

Have you been to Oxford? Any stories, recommendations?

Cheerio!

  1. Addison’s Walk was one of the most beautiful places we went when I went to the UK with DJB. You will LOVE it.

I’m sure you thought of this already, but go to evensong at Christ Church. The Covered Market is great for local color and good food. And climb St. Mary’s tower!

Next time I see you, I’d love to swap stories! Our group had several hilarious mishaps with DJB that make great tales now, and I want to hear about your travels.
